My favorite word

Laughter.... it's my favorite word. I love it when I hear it.... it could be a little held-in chuckle or a big belly laugh... either way, it's a beautiful thing. I once heard a quote, "Laughter... it's a smile that bursts."
Well, these two won me over with their laughter and smiles. It was a beautiful engagement session and I can't wait to photograph their wedding! Congratulations Kayla and Zach!

It's the little things that mean the most

It was small and intimate...family and friends witnessed the ceremony that bonded them together. Although the wedding was small in size, the love between them is immeasurable... I was very happy to capture it for them. Congratulations Matt and Hayden.... here's to a beautiful future.

Survivor

A true survivor ….
Hitting a tree on the Colorado slopes 3 years ago left him a broken man. A fractured skull, broken bones and ribs puncturing his lungs were among the injuries he suffered. After a seven day coma, he awoke to a different life. No longer could he smell or taste… those senses were gone and still are. Not a smell or taste can he detect. His fluent speech had disappeared as well and in its place, a broken language with syllables that take time to speak.
Nonetheless, he stood before me… a survivor. A survivor whos real heart and personality has triumphed through tragedy. He’s a truly nice guy who wants people to look beyond his so-called “imperfections”. So now with the help of his friends, he’s on his way to fulfilling his dream of being on the show “Survivor”…. Good luck with your adventure, Troy… I wish you the very best.

Welcome Back.... I'm saying that to myself... it's been a long time since I've posted to the blog. It's not that I haven't been busy because I have... extremely busy!... and I love it. The Shelley Jensen Photography facebook page has been getting all the attention which left the blog a little lonely. But, I'm back and with a brand new post from a session that is one of my favorites.
It's Spring... 8 days into it, actually but from the falling snow you wouldn't be able to tell.
This couple was amazing, fun, beautiful... all wrapped up in a KU lovin' package! This campus is in fact where he proposed... and a perfect place to hold their session.

I've been waiting to enter this photo in a contest. This is a photo of one of the most beautiful couples I know. Their love for each other is evident every time I'm around them. I love this photo of them... it captures the way they feel for each other...her soft smile and the way he leans into her just reminds me of just how close they are.
Then, I found out that one of my all-time favorite photographers was the guest judge. She inspires me every day to do better, be better and challenge myself...

The nearness of you

Meet Kevin and Jaclyn - a beautiful couple.... I mean beautiful. You could just feel how close they are together..... which in turn makes my job sooooooo easy! They move together and their intimacy makes for some very natural photography.

We visited 3 locations in Kansas City with some amazing backdrops. And, to top it off, the weather was fabulous!

Winter Wonderland Wedding

Congratulations to Maggie and Mitchell who enjoyed a beautiful holiday wedding complete with 3 inches of snow that fell to the ground just hours before the wedding started. I've never seen a wedding ceremony filled with so many friends and family.... it was a packed house... or church rather.... it was standing room only! From the "first look" to the "I do's", to the waaaaay fun reception, this wedding was FUN AND FABULOUS! So were the bride and groom. I was super happy to spend the day with them. And, she even allowed plenty of time for some more photographs with the wedding party right after the ceremony. We made use of some interesting locations in Holton Kansas and got some pretty good shots. Thanks Rachel and Zac for such a memorable day.... "I Do"

They love each other.... really, truly love each other. And their friends and family love them too.... and they are proud of them... really proud - it was obvious from the toasts, speeches, and they way the guests and family members spoke of them the entire day!

It was a beautiful day... a perfect day for Amber and Taylin to get married. I had the chance to photograph their engagement and was honored to photograph this special day for them as well. Sweet Bond

I love the fall colors... the weather... the feeling of fall.... it's just beautiful. And, so was this mother and son who I had the opportunity to get to know during their photo shoot. He said, "I love her laugh. It's cute when she laughs... it makes me smile."

She said, "He's loving. I love his eyes.... he's selfless and he's always there for me."

They each spoke of the other with so much admiration.... they truly adore each other... and, it shows.
They told me that the first time they spent time together, they had snuck into a public pool late at night with some friends and hung out together. Three years later, he and those same friends, snuck into that same pool, laid out roses and a ring and much to her surprise, he popped the question!

I was happy to be able to photograph some memorable engagement snapshots.... here's to the beautiful couple who will tie the knot early 2012 in the Bahamas! Congratulations, Nikki and Trent.... here's to a wonderful future together.....

October Senior of the Month!

Introducing Kyle.... October's Senior of the Month. This 2011 Seaman Viking is a guy with a LOT going on .... and a lot is a good thing! He's a K-state fan, already with a scholarship, looking to pursue a degree in architectural engineering. He's a rockin' sax player who's involved in jazz band and orchestra. He is currently helping build a home through Habitat for Humanity .... Kyle's an all around good kid and I had a great time hanging out with him and his mom for this session! Good luck in all you do, Kyle... you're off to a great start!

I first introduced you to this couple when I had the honor of being there and photographing the moment he proposed to her. This time, I got to photograph the engagement session.... and, what a memorable engagement session it turned out to be.
Props like red chairs are always fun except when they take a tumble and take the couple down with them right into the rose bushes.... sorry guys.... it was fun though.... right???? And, the shots were worth it? ..... right? :)

They are a beautiful and fun loving couple.... I even got to meet their dog, George! Looking forward to the wedding and more fun in the future! Happy engagement!

Where did the time go?

When it comes to our children, sometimes we think "it seems like they were just born, and now look at how grown up they are." Time passes so quickly and before you know it, our children are out of diapers, starting school, running around with their friends, and then graduating. Then we ask ourselves, "Where did the time go?"

I'm sure this mom is asking herself the same thing when she looks at her beautiful daughter. I was lucky enough to be able to capture this milestone in her life.... 8th grade graduation. Great things are ahead of you.... enjoy every minute of it... and keep smiling!

She's a teacher.... so when they went on their first date, instead of bringing her flowers, he brought her a shiny red apple. She was smitten... and he was in love. That's how it all started so to keep with the theme of their lives, they chose the school where she teaches to have their wedding. And, what a wedding it was! The entire wedding party, parents, grandparents.... everyone wore converse sneakers. They had several flower girls.... two of them were their very own puppies pulled down the aisle in custom made wagon.
The playground made the perfect setting for some playful wedding shots. Here's to Scott and Katie .... keep laughing, keep smiling, and keep having fun together! Congratulations.... here's a little sneak peek for you!

We went to grade school together... kindergarten through 8th grade and she was my best friend. :) That means we shared a lot together.... feathered hair, "snowball" dances at the skating rink, first "loves"... and so much more.

I told her when I saw her that she hadn't changed a bit.... and it's true.... her and her family are just as beautiful as ever and I was so glad to finally see her again.

I was happy to get to photograph her family and her boys..... and they are allllllll boy for sure! Oh, and, we had to get Russell the dog in there too! Here's a sneak peek, Kim.... enjoy..... we'll be friends always. :)

Birthday wishes

I love suprises... especially when they are sincerely thought out and come from the heart. So, I get a phone call from one of my dearest friends husband. He wants to suprise her with photos of their 3 adorable children for her birthday. So, he listens closely regarding her work schedule for a time when he can load the 3 kiddos in the car, make the drive to Topeka, get the session done, and hurry back to Kansas City before she can even realize they were gone. All while keeping 3 kiddos hush hush about it until the big reveal.... I gotta hand it to him, he did a great job.

The love of a baby

I remember how excited they were when they came to me for their maternity session. Not only did the mother to be just simply glow, but the soon-to-be daddy was all smiles too! And, after sleepless nights, cravings and preparing the nursery, he's finally arrived and made his parents the happiest people on earth! Congratulations to both of you.... he's simply sweet. September Senior of the Month... Meet Sammy

Meet Sammy.... she's a Manhattan High 2011 senior! She was chosen as September's Senior of the Month. We had so much fun at her session. She's full of life, smiles and has so many aspirations for this year and next. Her love of water helps with her dedication to her swim team and also may just have K-State interested in her for their women's rowing team. But, to top it all off, Sammy's interested in going to collage to become a trauma surgeon. The girl's got goals! Simply Stunning

In a previous post, I commented on how exciting it is for me to photograph weddings because they are all so different. But what they all have in common is that they are all beautiful and filled with emotions that are always a joy to capture. This wedding was simply stunning and I had been excited for months to be able to photograph it. The bride specifically asked for pictures that were creative and a little bit different and edgy. It gave me an opportunity to really get creative and capture the beauty of the bride and groom in some unique ways. A few weeks ago I had the honor of photographing a beautiful wedding that had such a fun-loving personal touch added to it. Not only were the bride and groom excited about their special day, their wedding party was so excited that they didn't just walk down the aisle... they danced down the aisle with laughter and smiles in celebration of the wonderful day. Special heartfelt music played throughout the ceremony and dancing was abundant at the reception as well to make for a wedding to remember. The thing I love most about photographing high school seniors is that they are all different. Different personalities and different interests makes my job exciting and new each day. So, when Devin said he was a swimmer, I was super excited to get some cool shots by the pool! My goal with every senior is to really capture their personality and to make EVERY session different. Meet Andrew... the first of many "Seniors of the Month" who will be showcased on the blog and facebook page. Andrew was so great as his session.... all 6"3" of him! :) He's a football player for Royal Valley and is looking forward to a super season this year. He's also a rockin' guitar player... playin' since he was 12. He busted out some Jimmy Hendricks during the session for me and I must say it made me wish that I would have kept taking lessons back in the day.

True Character

I posted this quote on my facebook page the other day... "Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open."

When I met this senior for her session, that quote rang so true. She has beautiful character. She holds her family in high regard and her kindness was shown time and time again throughout the few hours that I spent with her.

She's anxiously awaiting the start of her senior year amidst the trials and struggles she's recently faced. It was genuinely fun to hang out with her .... she's a great girl and I wish her the best for her last year in high school.

It was time to hit the books for this engagement session. She's wrapping up her degree, and one of the places she visits often is the library on the K-State campus. So, I couldn't think of a better way to have a little fun with their session and go "study" a little bit!

Obstacle?

So, with almost every wedding there are obstacles to overcome.... it might be rain, someone may be late, heat and humidity, late flights, etc. All easy to overcome ... that's my job... relax and overcome the obstacles. What was the obstacle with this wedding??? They just wouldn't stop kissing! :) That's right... whether the shots were posed or candid, they were either kissing or just about to.

Which, of course, made for some beautiful and intimate shots of this lovely couple. And, their friends and family were so much fun to be around. There was non stop laughter and smiles all throughout the day. So, congrats Mike and Jenny ... it was an honor to be the photographer of your wedding.... and I hope you never stop kissing. :)

Engagement sessions are always fun... for many reasons. It's one of the first exciting times as a newly engaged couple. It's always fun to stroll hand in hand and get the first "true" pictures as the soon to be Mr. and Mrs. It's also a great way for me to work with couples as their photographer before the actual wedding day. Weddings are so important and it's my job to get beautiful images of their special day. It's such a personal and intimate day so the engagement session gives me a chance to really just "hang out with the couple", and get to know them a little bit more.

I truly have so much fun with my seniors.... my husband says I'm still a kid at heart... so maybe that's why I have such a good connection with them. Ahhhh babies... I love those newborn smells and wrinkly little faces. I always tell parents that you just never know what to expect at a newborn session. That tiny little boy or girl is actually in charge the day of the session. When baby feels the need to cry, we stop and soothe. When baby is hungry, we stop and feed. When baby has to take care of business, we stop and change the diaper.
But, patience always leads to beautiful memorable shots of those new bundles of cuteness. I had a great time with this new mom and dad and little baby "P". He really made me smile and I hope these pictures make you smile too. Here's a little sneak peek Mom and Dad. Enjoy.

So much fun

I had the honor of being the photographer of another beautiful wedding. Everytime, I just can't wait to get there and see the excitement of the bride and groom, the decor, the nervous chatter of the parents, the flowers and the coordinating extras that make the day just perfect.
This bride and groom were a joy to be around and their wedding party was so much fun. There was an incredible toast by one of the groomsmen, a surprise dance for a couple who had been married almost fifty-one years, and some rockin' bridesmaids who wanted to "play" with the camera. And, check out this bride and groom... beautiful. And, he said he wasn't photogenic.. (scroll up... I beg to differ!)

He Needed Her...

When they came over to discuss their upcoming wedding and the need for a photographer who fit their style, you couldn't help but notice his bandaged leg and the walker that was helping him get around. You also couldn't deny the connection the two of them had as well. He explained to us that he had been in a motorcycle accident which nearly cost him his leg. The thought of amputation was beyond his comprehension and that choice was simply not an option for him. And, who was by his side through the pain, the struggles, the rehabilitation??? ... She was. And, he knew he needed her. And, he knew he loved her ... and, she loved him back. She was beside him through it all. So, he proposed. Right there in the hospital. And she said yes. But, with everything going on, there just wasn't time for a ring. But, the ring wasn't important to them. Their commitment to each other and their commitment to getting him back on his feet was the most important thing.

But, tonight... the ring and a proper proposal was the most important thing to him. And, he wanted to get it just perfect. So, he made plans... perfect plans... the flight, the ring, and me... there to capture it all for them... I love my job... and I REALLY like this couple. Thanks for letting me share this special moment with you... oh, and she said "yes".... again. :) And, you should see that ring!!!!

Snips and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails ...

Um... that's NOT what this little boy was made of. I'd say he was more of the sugar and spice variety... so darn sweet! He was full of smiles and so happy to get his pictures taken. We fought through the summer heat that day but managed to get some great shots of him. His momma was so proud so we had to take a few beautiful shots of her too. I know what it's like to feel the love of a little boy having so many of my own. You could tell that this little guy was VERY special to her.

The smile of a child

I love kids. It's a good thing because I have five of my own! What I love about them is their genuine excitement for the little things in life. A neat shaped rock or a the coolness of water on their toes can really make them laugh and smile.
It's fun for me to meet them and try to find interesting ways to get them to warm up to me during the photo sessions. They always like to look at my camera and the cool buttons on it. And, sometimes I let them take a picture of mom or dad before the session starts - that usually gets a big smile from them.

Here's a few sneak peeks from some very recent sessions. The smile and laughter of a child makes me melt and appreciate the simple things in life. Enjoy.

Fairytale

Over the past 3 weeks I've photographed 4 weddings each with their own story to tell. Every bride just radiates joy on that day. It's fun to watch the day unfold. She ever so carefully applies her make-up, nervously chatters with her gitty and helpful bridesmaids, and paces the room until the perfect moment arrives to put on the dress. She remembers the day she met her groom and re-tells the story of the engagement .... all the while counting down the minutes until someone comes into the room and says, "It's time."

Smiles, tears, hugs, laughter... I've seen it all. And, over the past 3 weeks, I've seen 4 fairytales come true.

The best memories

I had the honor of photographing this wedding just this past Saturday and I couldn't wait to download the sd cards and shuffle though the images. Not only was this couple radiating beauty on their special day, but they were just surrounded by a loving family and some super fun and supportive friends. I got to spend 9 hours with them that day capturing some very special memories of a very important day. As I looked through the images that I eventually want to edit and give them, this one popped out to me. It captured some of the best memories of that day. It captures her beauty, his charm, laughter, fun, friends and a memorable moment that I was so happy to be a part of! So, "C" and "K" enjoy this image. So many more to come in a few weeks. I had a lot of fun!

I posted something on my facebook today about having the perfect day. Do you ever have one of those days where everything goes right? I'm talking about the big things and the little things. Everything falls into place, the stars align and the big guy upstairs is smiling down upon you. Well, I had one of those days today.

And this session happened to fall on one of those perfect days as well. Perfect outdoor lighting and the perfect couple made this session just too cute! Looking forward to their wedding day! Hope you had fun, guys. I know I did.

Re-Live the Dress!

So, some photographers call this style of session, "Trash the Dress". I prefer to call it "Re-live the Dress." You're re-living the moment when you first put on your wedding gown. Imagine slipping back into the dress and re-living some of the moments from that day. But, this time, the nerves are gone and it's just fun, fun, fun. These sessions are great for anniversaries or just a time for you and your husband to re-connect. Or, maybe you just couldn't get wedding photos on your actual wedding day.
Either way, these sessions are some of my favorites! Thanks A and M for having so much fun with me that day! I had a blast!

Well, here you go....

- You won't see me in FRONT of the camera very often. I've always been that way.

- I have 5 children.

- I married my best friend and I think he looks great in a toolbelt.

- I leave drawers, cabinets and lids open all the time.

- I love laughter.

- The buttons on my cell phone confuse me.

- I can't sing. Not even a little bit.

- I talk with my hands ... a lot.

One of the most beautiful things about a wedding is getting to spend time with the bride while she and her bridesmaids and family get ready for the big moment. Making sure her hair is coiled perfectly, coating each eyelash to it's fullest and putting on the perfect pout are all very important steps toward the moment she walks down to meet her groom.
I always enjoy capturing the little things and the little moments as they get ready for such a special moment in their lives.

One of my favorite things about photography is catching those moments of perfection. It might be a laugh, smile, embrace or in this case a "look". And, although we all get wrapped up in the endless amount of "to-do's" we have throughout our day, children, jobs, fixing things that need fixed, I was glad to be able to capture this look of endearing happiness this couple still gives each other. The way they looked at each other - it was simply amazing. Breathtaking really. The out-pouring of love they have for each other is obvious from the moment you see them. And their friends and family can attest, and did, that you will never meet two nicer people. Their geniune admiration for each other made for the most beautiful wedding and at one point, I had tears in MY eyes because of the warmth and kindness that I was shown that day by them, her mother, his mother, her brother ... the list goes on and on.

So, simply said, they are the couple to aspire to. Here is just a sneak peek for them from their wedding day. I was proud and honored to be a part of their celebration.

Back to the Basics

There's so much going on in the world today that sometimes we forget to just leave it all behind us and just "be". And when I say just "be", I mean "be together." No phones, no i-pods, no electronics.... just family time. That was what was so fun about this session with this beautiful family. We just hung out together and had some fun. And, just from the little time I spent with them, I could tell that they like to get back to the basics and have some real family time by just being together. So, thanks guys for hanging out with me ... it was a combination of relaxing and chillin'. I think the kids call that, "chillaxin'!

It's always fun to see how kids grow. I had a session with this little guy last year and since they purchased the toddler session package, they get to come back to me year after year and I get to see how much this little guy changes. I think he's just getting cuter by the minute. And, look at that hair! Justin Bieber better watch out - this little dude's gonna get all your girls!
